Below is the statement issued by Scott Sperling, Chair of Partners Board of Directors, to all employees.

Last night, Dr. David Torchiana informed the Partners Board of his intent to retire at the end of April. This is something that I know Torch has been contemplating for some time. Torch has been a valued leader, and he has led this organization in a thoughtful and effective manner. Appointed as President and CEO of Partners in March, 2015, he had previously served as chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization starting in 2003, after a distinguished career as a cardiothoracic surgeon at MGH. His principal career goal has always been to make health care better and more cost effective. He is a much sought-after speaker and thought leader on both state and national matters related to health care trends and policy. His leadership in the public policy environment, his Partners 2.0 implementation efforts and the leadership he demonstrated around the acquisition of Mass. Eye and Ear are just a few examples of his efforts that have left this organization in a stronger position.

Over the coming weeks, the Partners Board will work on the details of a search process to find Torch’s successor. We will – as we always have – conduct a national search to ensure that we find the best person possible to lead Partners HealthCare into the future.

Please join me in thanking Torch for his service to Partners and MGH and for his well-deserved retirement.

Scott Sperling

Chair, Partners Board of Directors
