Tom Sequist, MD, Partners HealthCare's Chief Quality and Safety Officer, spoke recently with Stat News about his own heritage as an American Indian, as well as the programs with which he is involved today to promote health within the American Indian community.

Sequist runs the Four Directions Summer Research Program, which brings American Indian undergraduates to Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) to engage in research projects, develop their careers, and network with peers and faculty. Sequist, who is also a physician at BWH, runs the Brigham and Women's Outreach Program, which partners with clinical colleagues in the Indian Health Service (IHS) to improve the health status of American Indian/Alaskan Natives. Volunteers from BWH travel to IHS sites to perform clinical visits and teaching.
