More than 200 emergency room clinicians at six Partners hospitals came together to create a list of five tests, treatments, and disposition decisions to avoid in the emergency room. These procedures are costly and often add little value when evaluating the total patient experience. The procedures are also things that emergency room clinicians can make judgements on, and do not require outside specialty input.

As health care costs continue to rise, as well as the overutilization of emergency rooms, the group of physicians, physicians assistants, and nurse practitioners came together to gain consensus on this group of procedures, whittled down from an initial list of 64.
