Getting to Boston
Boston is easily accessible by plane, train, bus or car.
Massachusetts General Hospital is located in Boston's West End at the foot of historic Beacon Hill, on the banks of the Charles River.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital is located between Huntington and Brookline Avenues, within the Longwood medical area.
Car
There are three main routes into Boston:
- I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) from the west
- I-95 from the north and south
- I-93 from the north and south
Subway
The MBTA offers an online trip-planner useful for figuring out how to get around by subway, local bus, and train.
Bus
Nationwide bus companies including Greyhound and Peter Pan stop in downtown Boston. Several regional bus companies offer scheduled service from Boston to New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York City. A list can be found at South Station Information.
Train
Amtrak has scheduled train service to Boston from New York and other points in the Northeast Corridor. The trip from New York City takes 3 1/2 hours on Acela Express trains, about 4 hours on other trains.
Amtrak has three Boston stops:
- Rte. 128 is about 12 miles from downtown and is a good place to get off if you are visiting the western or southern suburbs.
- Back Bay Station is in the city of Boston, convenient to hotels in the Back Bay and the South End and the Orange Line subway.
- The terminus is South Station, near the financial district and on the Red Line subway. It is convenient for the hotels along the waterfront and the theater district.
Air
Logan Airport is located in East Boston. For your convenience there are numerous airlines that fly in and out of Boston.
Logan Airport is four miles from MGH and seven miles from BWH; travel time varies significantly based on time of day and traffic conditions.
