Committee Membership
There are several committees that impact residency and fellowship training at Partners. These committees are pivotal in optimizing graduate medical education at our institutions and provide one way for sharing trainees’ ideas and feedback with institutional leadership. The three Education Committees that oversee the Partners teaching mission are the BWH Education Committee (BWHEC), the MGH Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) which is a subcommittee of ECOTE (the Executive Committee on Teaching and Education), and the Partners Education Committee (PEC). These are the principal bodies charged with developing education policies at our institutions as well as deciding many issues that are of greatest interest to trainees.
The committee membership includes GME leadership, a select group of residency and fellowship program directors, trainee representatives, and other senior hospital and education leaders. The selection of trainee members involves a two-step peer-selection process consisting of the nomination stage followed by the election. In August, the Office of GME sends out a request for volunteers to fill vacant positions, encouraging trainees to submit a campaign statement briefly describing their interests as well as prior experience to facilitate the election process. A ballot is then sent out to all trainees to select their trainee representatives for BWHEC and MGH GMEC, from which a subset of trainees, based on trainee interest and the availability of vacant positions, is invited to sit on the Partners Education Committee. Trainee representatives serve a renewable two-year term, during which they are expected to attend the majority of the committee meetings.
The responsibilities of trainees serving on the educational committees include assisting faculty with overseeing the quality of the clinical learning environment for all GME programs, ensuring compliance with institutional and program standards, including those set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and serving as an advocate for issues related to GME trainees.
Each committee meets at least quarterly, and the schedule for these meeting is available on the Education Committee page.
Other committee membership opportunities: The Evaluation and Feedback subcommittee of PEC as well as the Internal Review, or Special Review Committees provide additional opportunities for trainees to make an impact on residency and fellowship training, to learn more about Graduate Medical Education at Partners, and to assist individual programs with the program improvement process. Trainees do not need to be peer-selected for these committees and are encouraged to volunteer during the selection process for the education committees mentioned above as well as throughout the year.
Trainees who wish to volunteer for any of these committees should contact the GME accreditation manager for their program.
