Research Management
"At Research Management, we facilitate administrative, financial and regulatory requirements of research activities at our member institutions. We seek to proactively address the administrative demands on investigators by providing exceptional customer service to our distinguished research community and collaborators in their pioneering efforts in science and medicine."
-Andrew Chase, Vice President of Research Management
Research is fundamental to the mission of Partners HealthCare and the research enterprise, which covers the spectrum from basic science to translational and clinical investigation, and accounts for $1.4 billion of annual research revenue. As stewards of sponsored funds for the Partners entities, Research Management is committed to identifying and adhering to best practices in grants and contracts administration and upholding the highest standards of integrity and fiduciary responsibility.
The Research Management departments at Partners that support the research enterprise at our hospitals are listed below.
The Pre-Award team provides support and assistance to Principal Investigators (PIs) and Department Administrators (DAs) as they prepare proposals for submission to external sponsors. In addition, they are responsible for the Just-in-Time and Progress Report processes. The Pre-Award team works closely with colleagues on RM's Post-Award, Contracts and Research Finance teams to support these research projects throughout various stages in the lifecycle of a grant.
Post-Award/Contracts (Grants)
The Post-Award team serves as the liaison between Principal Investigators (PIs) and sponsors once awards have been issued and to review and negotiate incoming agreements from foundations and non-profit institutions and contracts from federal and state agencies as well as all modifications related to these awards.
The Research Management Analytics & Reporting team provides financial reporting, strategic analysis and budget support to Partners and hospital senior leadership regarding research operations. In addition, the group is responsible for preparing cost analysis and cost proposals related to the F&A negotiation, fringe rate agreements and patient care costs for research.
The Research Applications Group is responsible for supporting the administrative systems required to manage the Partners biomedical research portfolio. The group's applications provide the core features necessary for the administration of research throughout Partners – human studies oversight, grants and contracts processing, and animal program management and include InfoEd, Insight and MicroStrategy.
Research Finance partners with Principal Investigators (PIs) and Department Administrators (DAs) to manage the financial activity through control and review of all research-related transactions. This includes report preparation and distribution, grant and contract billing, receivables management, indirect cost review and cash management. This office acts as a liaison between Research Management and the broader Partners Finance organization.
PeopleSoft is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system used to track and manage business resources. The various modules allow for financial, procurement, grant and human resource/payroll management. PeopleSoft facilitates the flow of business functions between various internal departments, as well as managing connections to outside vendors and other Partners' software applications.
