Bioinformatics Core (HPCGG) - Kohane
The HPCGG Bioinformatics Core recognizes that quantitative analytic methods
are now central to the pursuit of biomedical research. The intersection
of information science, biostatistics, biology and clinical medicine requires
multidisciplinary collaborative efforts that the Bioinformatics Core is
designed to nurture. Whether it is expression microarrays, proteomic experiments
or populations-wide linkage studies, the Bioinformatics Core works with
investigators across the Harvard Medical community including affiliated
hospitals. Activities of the Bioinformatics Core range from the provision
of services to fully-collaborative grant-funded investigations.
Biomaterials Collection
Core (BWH) - Bry
The Crimson Biomaterials Collection Core Facility prospectively collects discarded
clinical materials matching investigator-defined criteria against available information
on clinical samples, including ICD.9 codes and results of clinical laboratory
testing. Studies using the core must either (1) have an IRB-approved protocol
for discarded clinical materials and anonymized information or (2) a protocol
to allow collection of discarded samples from patients consented for their study.
Collected samples may be additionally processed, aliquotted, or tested per the
menu of clinical laboratory tests available within the BWH Clinical Laboratories.
Biosample Services Facility (HPCGG) - Morgan
The Biosample Services Facility provides a broad spectrum of biosample processing,
management, and banking services to investigators in the Harvard-Partners
research community. Services are available to IRB approved studies in the
HMS-Partners community and beyond. We accept whole blood from appropriately
consented subjects for processing to DNA, lymphoblast cell lines, serum,
and plasma. We offer cryogenic storage of the purified products as required,
in addition to tracking of sample histories in a Laboratory Information
Management System dedicated to the BSF facility operation.
Biostatistics Core - CCI
(BWH) - Hurwitz
Biostatistics support is available to investigators in the Brigham and Women's
research community for statistical consulting on issues such as study design
and data analysis for manuscripts and grant applications. Resources are
limited, so planning ahead is essential. The Biostatistics Consulting Service
is part of the Biostatistics Core of the Center for Clinical Investigation.
Cell Culture
and Microscopy Core (BWH) – Rheinwald
The Cell Culture and Microscopy Core provides well-characterized primary
and experimentally immortalized human cell lines, custom culture services,
and training and access to a conventional fluorescence microscope and digital
camera.
Clinical Genetic Research Facility (MGH) - Gusella
The Clinical Genetic Research Facility (CGRF) offers clinical investigators
a convenient, modern research-dedicated facility for outpatient studies
involving genetics. Our outpatient exam rooms and phlebotomy rooms are
fully equipped, and an experienced medical assistant is available to facilitate
the visits.
Clinical
Research Program (MGH) - Crowley
The Clinical Research Program (CRP) is the MGH’s
infrastructure for clinical investigators. Through five units, it provides
direct services to faculty and staff for all types of clinical research
(translational, trials and outcomes). The CRP also develops innovative
tools to anticipate and enable future research opportunities. The five
units include an Education Unit , Clinical Research Support Office (CRSO)
, Genetics and Genomics Unit , Disease Management and Outcomes Unit,
and an Information Management Unit.

The Clinical Trials Center is a convenient facility for outpatient clinical
trials. Infusion interview, exam, and procedure rooms are available
for research staff, along with a touchdown space with telephone, fax,
and computer access. Experienced personnel are on hand to perform phlebotomy,
blood, and specimen processing, ECGs, and handle specimen packaging,
shipping, and storage.

The Confocal Microscope Core provides access and assistance provided
in the use of confocal microscopy with additional capabilities in live-cell
imaging and photobleaching studies.

The DNA Sequencing Core provides highly accurate, high quality DNA sequencing
service to the BWH community, and other users as desired. Our turn-around-time
is 36 to 72 hrs.
DNA Sequencing Core (HPCGG)

The Sequencing core is involved in developing and implementing high throughput
methods for the mapping, sequencing and resequencing of genes and genomes.
The core has the ability to prepare plasmid libraries from genomic DNA,
large insert clones, or PCR products. Robotic tools are used to pick
colonies, array them into microtiter plates, prepare DNA and sequence
the DNA using dideoxy chain termination chemistry.

The DNA Sequencing Core offers sequencing service in a timely, economical,
and reliable manner. Results are made available to you over the internet
as text-only files and chromatogram files which contain the fluorescent
dye peaks the sequencer uses to determine base calls.

The DNA Synthesis Core offers multiple scale synthesis of DNA oligonucleotides,
both modified and unmodified.
Education Core - CCI (BWH)

The Center for Clinical Investigation (CCI), offers educational services
designed to promote high quality clinical research at BWH for both investigators
and study coordinators. A range of workshops is offered to help train
new research coordinators in how to conduct clinical studies. In addition,
CCI offers ongoing continuing education sessions for experienced study
coordinators who want to increase their knowledge regarding good clinical
practices and current methods for performing high-quality clinical trials.
Electrophysiology Core (MGH) - Cantiello
The goal of the Electrophysiology Core (EPC) resource is to provide
the MGH scientific and medical communities with a facility to help generate
electrophysiological information, including characterization of channel
function in various cell models and preparations. The EPC also provides
highly skilled personnel for consultation, and the training of fellows
and laboratory personnel.

Cardiovascular Interventional Laboratory (BWH) - Rogers
The experimental Cardiovascular Interventional Laboratory offers state-of-the-art
interventional/surgical experimental facilities with diagnostic imaging
technologies and device based interventional vascular models, as well as
innovative histology and pathology services in collaboration with the HST
Biomedical Engineering Center Core Pathology Laboratory). Complex tissue/device
analysis, quantitative morphometric analyses and immunohistochemistry and
bioanalytical techniques and services are also available.
Flow Cytometry Core (BWH) - Liao
To provide high standard cell sorting and analysis services to the research community at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Longwood Medical area.
Flow Cytometry Core Facility - CBRC (MGH) - Georgopoulos
The Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides the services and equipment to
analyze several flow cytometric assays. The DAKO MoFlo high speed cell
sorter sorts cells at 30,000 events/second; 2 or 4 way cell sorting is
possible as well as single cell sorting into microtiter plates. The FACSCanto
benchtop analyzer is configured for standard 6 color cellular analysis.
Flow Cytometry Core (MGH) – Preffer
The cell sorting and analysis lab provides access to the most sophisticated
flow cytometers presently available. The core is able to analyze and physically
separate cells based upon feathers detectable with fluorescently labeled
monoclonal antibodies.
Gel
Scanning Core (BWH) - Romero
Typhoon™ 9410 Variable Mode Imager and PC workstations are available to
any Principal Investigator in the Longwood Medical Area and offer high performance
gel and blot imaging with the capability of microarray analysis. It offers three
methods of detection: storage phosphor, fluorescence and chemiluminescence. This
imager unites proven storage phosphor autoradiography technology with four-color,
non-radioactive fluorescent labeling techniques.
Gene Modification Lab (HPCGG) - Kucherlapati
The Gene Modification Laboratory was established to integrate and launch
new technologies for rapid generation of gene-modified constructs and
mutant mice for supporting mouse and human genetics research programs
in the Harvard / Partners community.

The Harvard Partners Genotyping Facility, provides flexible, high quality,
high throughput SNP Genotyping.
Human Genetics Research
Service – CCI (BWH) - Celedon
The Human Genetics Research Service, is a collaborative effort between
the Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics (HPCGG) and the
Brigham and Women's Center for Clinical Investigation (CCI). This program
is designed to provide consultation to investigators regarding the
incorporation of genetics and genomics in their research, including
help in arranging collaborations and accessing available resources
for genotyping, sequencing and genetic epidemiology.
Histopathology
and Image Analysis Core (BWH) - Haley
The Histopathology and Image Analysis Core facility provides a wide
array of histology services, including sample processing, embedding
and sectioning; routine chemical stains such as H&E, trichrome,
and PAS; specialized chemical stains such as Sirius Red; immunostaining,
and image analysis/morphometric analyses.
Knight Surgical Research Lab (MGH) - Alam
The Knight Surgical Research Laboratory (KSRL) is an AALAC accredited,
fully staffed and stocked, multi-purpose large animal survival surgery
facility. The lab was established in 1989 and is operated and maintained
by the Department of Surgery. Investigators from the Department of Surgery
and outside the Department use the facility to perform surgery for Subcommittee
on Research Animal Care (SRAC) approved large animal research studies.

The Laser Capture Core offers a laser capture microscopy service for collecting
samples from histological sections or cell cultures.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Core (MGH) – Rosen
The backbone of the Martinos Center is the Imaging and Computational Core
Resources. The Imaging Core includes an extensive and expanding inventory
of state-of-the-art MR, MEG, Optical Imaging and PET Imaging facilities
and equipment, including related laboratories and testing rooms. The Computational
Core oversees data processing, computational infrastructure, software and
hardware issues.
Microarray Core (HPCGG) - Morgan
HPCGG operates a full service unit to support Affymetrix microarray analysis.
Equipment comprising the available technology includes the Agilent 2100
bioanalyzer, and the Affymetrix GeneChip® System. The GeneChip® system
includes all of the hardware necessary for running and analyzing high-density
oligonucleotide arrays for human, mouse, rat, and yeast including a Model
320 hybridization oven, Model 450 Fluidics station and Model 3000 Scanner
with autoloader. Samples of RNA may be submitted to us for labeling and
analysis.
Microarray Facility (MGH) - Seed
The Microarray facility provides a quality core service to the investigator
with minimal microarray experience at a minimal price. The investigator
is trained through the microarray process, step-by-step, and provides the
investigator the requisite experience to analyze and interpret microarray
data. Spotted DNA microarrays are used exclusively and currently the facility
offers 34k Human and 20k Mouse arrays.

The Microscopy and Image Analysis Core offers state-of-the-art software/hardware
tools to generate and analyze quantitatively images obtained by a variety
of experimental methods.

The Microscopy Core of the Program in Membrane Biology
(PMB) is equipped and staffed to provide a wide range of services
to investigators from MGH and the Boston area scientific community in
the area of light and electron microscopy.
Monoclonal Antibody Production Core (MGH) - Ramesh
The purpose of the Monoclonal Core is to provide a monoclonal antibody
production service to research projects. Protein/peptides provided by
the individual investigators will be used to generate mouse monoclonal
antibodies.
Morphometric Analysis Center (MGH) - Kennedy
The MGH Morphometric Analysis Center (MMAC) is established for the generation
of neuroanatomic morphometric measurements. The Core transitions morphometric
methods developments into ‘production mode’, as the efficiency
and quantity of application areas grow.
Muscular Imaging Research Core (MIRC) (MGH) -
Torriani
The Muscular Imaging Research Core (MIRC) offers specialized imaging techniques
including quantitative computed tomography (QCT), magnetic resonance (MR)
spectroscopy of muscle and high-resolution soft tissue MR imaging. QCT
is a technique widely employed for studies evaluating body composition
and bone mineral density. MR spectroscopy is a technique that allows non-invasive
quantification of metabolites in human tissues.
Nucleic Acid Quantification (Real-Time PCR) Core (MGH) - Rabkin
The Nucleic Acid Core offers quantitative measurement of DNA or RNA levels
using real-time PCR.
Peptide
Synthesis/Protein Sequencing Core (MGH) - Khatri
The Peptide Synthesis/Protein Sequencing Core provides peptide/protein
services and consultations for the synthesis of peptide and sequencing
of peptides and proteins. The Endocrine Unit and the Partners AIDS Research
Center sponsor the Peptide Synthesis/Protein Sequencing Core.

The PET Core Laboratory provides a full range of technical and professional
services for the design and execution of programs using Positron Emission
Tomography (PET).

This Tissue and Blood Repository Core provides specimen
acquisition, processing and storage services, and access to archived
frozen tissue specimens to the BWH/MGH/DFCI research community.
Transgenic and Knockout
Facility - CBRC (MGH) - Georgopoulos
The transgenic core provides services, which includes microinjection
of oocytes and transplantation of embryos into foster recipients for
the generation of transgenic mice. ES cell injections and blastocyst
transplantation to generate knockout mice is also covered. The facility
is also equipped for the cryopreservation of 8-cell mouse embryos. The
transfection service provides the technology and expertise necessary
for the preparation of recombinant ES clones and their subsequent injection
into host blastocysts.
Transgenic Drosophila

The Transgenic Drosophila Fly Core provides a drosophila
embryo microinjection service for generating transgenic flies, for RNA
interference, or for other experimental purposes.
Tumor Imaging Metrics
Core (MGH/BWH/DF) - Harris/Barrish/VanDen Abbeele
The Tumor Imaging Metrics Core (TIMC) provides
standardized, consistent, and efficient radiological measurements to
evaluate tumor response. The Core makes reliable, quantitative, longitudinal
measurements (such as linear dimension, RECIST, volume, function, etc.)
of lesions from serial MRI, CT, and PET scan images. The Tumor Metrics
Core provides a service for managing these images, making measurements
in a routine, reliable, and centralized way, and making results available
to investigators efficiently.
Virology Core - CFAR (BWH)

The Virology Core provides Flow Cytometry and Real-Time
PCR services through the use of the Becton Dickinson FACSCalibur Flow
Cytometer and ABI PRISM 7000 Sequence Detection System. The core provides

Viral Vector Core (MGH) - Esteves
The Vector Core offers viral vectors with custom-designed
promoters and reporter genes and capacity for gene regulation.
