At MGH, a diabetes research team cured Type 1 (so-called juvenile) diabetes in 80% of diseased lab mice. After the team injected the mice for 40 days with a compound, diseased cells died off and were replaced by healthy adult stem cells. Previously they identified a T cell defect in diabetic mice that destroys insulin-producing beta cells.

Research Management Administration and Operations
Led by the Chief Operating Officer, the Research Management Administration and Operations group participates in the development of an integrated research strategy, provides overall direction for management of sponsored research and human studies programs, implements and manages the research compliance program, provides business planning and budgeting guidance for shared scientific resources, creates and distributes information relevant to Research Management and the broader research community, and develops and manages a comprehensive training and communications plan for employees within Research Management and the research community.

Research Grants and Contracts
The Research Grants and Contracts group manages the application and administration process for all grants and subcontracts. To do this, Grants and Contracts works closely with the Principal Investigators (PIs) and Department Administrators across all Partners entities, as well as collaborating institutions and sponsoring agencies. Grants and Contracts Administration is the official contracting entity at Partners for all federal and foundation awards and operates through delegation of authority from the Partners Board of Directors. All grant submissions must be signed off on by Grants and Contracts Administration prior to submission to the granting agency.

Research Finance
The Research Finance group partners with the Principal Investigators and Research Departments to manage the financial reporting and operating activities through control and review of all research related transactions, including report preparation and distribution, grant and contract billing, receivable management, indirect cost review, and cash management. This team acts as a liaison between Research Finance and the broader Partners Finance organization.

Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)
The Partners Human Research Committee (PHRC) is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Partners Research Management. As such, the PHRC must review and approve all human-subject research conducted by a Partners-affiliated investigator.

Partners Clinical Research Office (PCRO)
Partners Clinical Research Office (PCRO) is responsible for developing, negotiating and executing agreements and budgets for industry-sponsored clinical research for Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Faulkner Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Partners Community Healthcare, Inc. (PCHI).
