BRIGHAM AND WOMENS HOSPITAL The Brigham and Women's Hospital was established in 1980 by the merger of three Harvard-affiliated hospitals: the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, the Robert B. Brigham Hospital and the Boston Hospital for Women. The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, internationally recognized for its contributions to acute adult medical and surgical care, had been a principal Harvard teaching hospital since its founding in 1913. The Robert B. Brigham Hospital, established in 1914, served for over 40 years as the nation's only teaching hospital devoted solely to the research and treatment of arthritis and related diseases. From its inception, the Boston Hospital for Womena 1966 merger of the Boston Lying-In Hospital (established in 1832) and the Free Hospital for Women (established in 1875)-specialized in the obstetrical and gynecological care of women. |
