The BWH Medical Library is open to all BWH staff and employees. The library is located on Thorn 1 – Lower Pike.

Library staff is available to assist you between 8:00AM and 4:30PM, Monday through Friday.

The collection contains approximately 700 medical textbooks and other reference books. The library subscribes to 125 print journals. On the library’s intranet there are links to electronic resources, which include electronic journals, databases, electronic textbooks, and other resources. Databases include OVID, PUBMED, EBSCO Nursing and EBSCO Health Business.
The library also subscribes to REFWORKS, a web based bibliographic management system.
The Medical Library shares an online catalog with MGH’s Treadwell Library. Use this catalog to locate books and journals in the collection.

Library services include:

  • Use of the library collection, including books, journals, and electronic resources
  • Reference assistance in person, by phone, fax or e-mail
  • Literature/database searching
  • Interlibrary loans/document delivery for journal article and/or books
  • Internet access, user support and consultation
  • Group instruction and/or individual instruction

HARVARD'S FRANCIS A. COUNTWAY LIBRARY

The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, located in the Longwood Medical Area at 10 Shattuck Street, serves the Harvard School of Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston Medial Library and the Massachusetts Medical Society. The Countway Library holds more than 630,000 volumes, subscribes to 3,500 current journal titles and houses over 26,000 non-current biomedical journal titles. The library also houses one of the world’s leading medical history collections and provides access to many electronic information systems. The library's regular hours are:

Monday - Thursday 8 am - 11 pm
Friday 8 am - 7 pm
Saturday 9 am - 5 pm
Sunday noon - 11 pm

MGH TREADWELL LIBRARY (HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY)

Treadwell Library, the MGH Health Sciences Library, is open to all MGH employees, staff, IHP/HMS/HDS students, patients and patients’ families. It is located in Bartlett Hall Extension. Hours are:

Monday – Thursday 8 AM – 8 PM
Friday 8 AM – 7 PM
Saturday 10 AM – 4 PM
Sunday 2 - 8 PM

The library is closed on hospital holidays and at 5 PM the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Tours can be arranged.


The collection (700 active journal titles and 13,500 books) includes holdings in medicine, basic sciences, nursing, allied health sciences and consumer health. Use the library’s webpage for information about services, access to healthcare databases, electronic journals (over 500), electronic textbooks, and links to other useful Internet resources. Use MAGIC, the library’s online catalog, to learn what books and journals the library owns. Access MAGIC via computers in the library or from any remote location. Most books may be checked out while journals do not circulate. The library will obtain through the Interlibrary Loan books and journal articles it does not own. Photocopy machines are available.

Reference librarians are ready to help find the information you need Monday - Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM. The Quick Search Service offers two short searches per day from seven healthcare databases. You may visit in person, call, or email your questions. The Comprehensive Search Service allows you to work with an expert search analyst to obtain in-depth information from hundreds of databases. Make an appointment through the Information Desk.

PC workstations are available on the ground floor of the library. The library has network connections, which can be used to connect personal laptop computers. The library offers individual and group training classes in end-user search techniques, bibliographic management software and the Internet.
