The Program for Weight Management (PWM) is a multidisciplinary group
of healthcare providers within the Department of Surgerys Metabolic
Support Service. The PWM is designed for the safe and effective weight
loss for patients interested in losing twenty pounds or more. This
medically supervised program offers a full array of weight loss options
including calorie-controlled diets, liquid formula and food combination
diets, liquid formula only diets, pharmacological therapy and bariatric
surgery.
The PWM is staffed by board certified surgeons, internal medicine
specialists, registered dietitians and a physician's assistant who
specializes in weight management. The program meets weekly for patient
follow-up and group sessions for behavior modification and education.
The PWM also offers a weight maintenance program once a patient has
reached his or her goal weight, and works in conjunction with a nearby
facility to stress the importance of exercise in regard to weight
loss.

The MGH Weight Center is a comprehensive center devoted to patient
care, education and research in the areas of obesity and weight disorders.
Our multidisciplinary specialty practice caters to adults and children.
We view obesity as a complex disease, with multiple causes and clinical
manifestations and we direct our evaluation toward determining the
specific causes and complications of obesity in each of our patients.
Individualized treatment recommendations are based on these evaluations,
recognizing that in most cases weight disorders respond best to an
integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Options may include enrollment
of the patient in one of the medical or surgical treatment programs
at the Weight Center. Decisions about patient care are made collaboratively
among the patient, referring physician and Weight Center team.
Patient education is a critical component of our treatment programs.
Whenever possible we include the patient's family in our treatment
plan and we maintain close communication among the patient, referring
physician and Weight Center team.
Complementing our specialty practice, the MGH Weight Center supports
an active clinical and basic research program aimed at understanding
the biological and psychosocial basis of weight disorders and identifying
more effective means of treatment. As part of our ongoing research
our patients have the opportunity to participate directly in trials
of new and promising treatments.
