The Speech-Language Pathology Service’s mission and mandate is to provide the highest quality clinical care for swallowing and communication disorders to BWH patients. The scope of services includes the evaluation and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with oral communication disorders and deficits and oral-pharyngeal-esophageal dysphagia resultant of medically based etiology. Patients from all medical services may require the care and services provided by Speech, Voice and swallowing Pathology Service. Etiology may include head trauma, tumor, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebrovascular accident, neurological disease, tracheotomy, head and neck cancer, geriatrics and tracheotomy.

The emphasis of the Speech-Language Pathology Department is inpatient and outpatient swallowing disorders. Intervention includes performing clinical evaluations and performing video swallow studies on a variety of patients, including those with tracheotomy and those who are ventilator dependent.

Normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:3 am - 500 pm. For inpatients, service is provided at the bedside within 24 hours of receiving a consult. Consults are only received via beeper 11322,

The scope of services provided by Speech-Language Pathology Services includes the evaluation and treatment of inpatients and outpatients, children and adults, presenting with communication and swallowing disorders.

Disorders seen in adults include: aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, dysphagia (oral and pharyngeal swallowing problems), cognitive-linguistic deficits secondary to head injury, reading disabilities, accent reduction, articulation, stuttering and voice. Swallowing intervention also includes the evaluation and treatment of patients with tracheotomy. Inpatient and outpatient instrumental evaluation of swallowing via modified barium swallow studies) or Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) are conducted upon physician request. Etiology includes head trauma, tumor, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebrovascular accident, neurological disease, tracheotomy, head and neck cancer and geriatrics. Inpatient services are provided at the bedside in response to a consultation by patient's medical team or physician.

Pediatric disorders frequently seen include: articulation/phonology (problems in sound production), voice, delayed speech and language, developmental apraxia, learning disabilities, reading and written language disabilities, and stuttering. A team comprised of a nurse specialist, a dietician, and a speech-language pathologist provides evaluation of feeding and swallowing disorders in neonates, infants and toddlers on an outpatient basis. A pediatric speech-language pathologist conducts modified Barium Swallows and Velopharyngeal insufficiency studies for inpatient and outpatient.

Services are provided in multiple languages including Spanish.

Outpatient services allow for continuity of services and include centers in the main campus and communities of Revere and Chelsea.

Hours of operation: Daily 8am-6pm. Service is provided at bedside within 24 hours of receiving the consult.

OUTPATIENTS:
Hours of operation are 8 am - 6 pm Monday - Friday.
