Once the referral is entered into the computer it is put on a queue,
logged in and assigned to a therapist. The patient is seen within
24 hours of referral receipt.
Physical Therapy assesses the patient's
level of function by evaluating strength, ROM, coordination, balance,
mobility and safety awareness; gears treatment to maximize patient's
safety and mobility; makes recommendations for discharge plan (need
for rehab, chronic placement, home services) including an exercise
program, ambulation status and positioning; provides a variety of
equipment to optimize safe mobility and positioning.
Occupational Therapy assesses the patient's
level of function by evaluating self-care skills (such as bathing,
dressing, feeding, transferring), upper extremity status and positioning
needs, cognitive-perceptual skills and their impact on function and
safety; gears treatment to maximize patients' functional independence
and safety level; makes recommendations for discharge plan (i.e.,
need for acute rehab, chronic placement, home services), including
safety at home and splinting; provides equipment to optimize function
and safety in the home (e.g., bathroom equipment, adaptive equipment
for self care, splints for upper extremity positioning).

scar management, sensory retraining, pain management, precautions
and progression of activity level/home exercise program; fabricates
splints and scar conformers; educates patients on wear and care of
orthotics; assesses ADL status and makes recommendations for adaptive
equipment and techniques to maximize role performance, including work
hardening and functional activities; instructs patients with cognitive
deficits in strategies to enhance performance of daily activities/safety.

Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
A multidisciplinary Cardiac Rehabilitation Risk Factor management
intervention program for patients diagnosed with coronary artery disease
and heart failure.
Occupational therapy (OT) is the therapeutic use of purposeful activities
designed to improve a patient's function during daily self care, home,
work, school and leisure activities. Occupational therapists evaluate
and treat patients with a wide variety of diagnoses including but
not limited to medical, neurologic, orthopedic, burns, hand and upper
extremity injuries, surgical, multiple trauma and cardiopulmonary.
Occupational therapy serves all age groups from neonate to geriatric.
OT evaluation includes the administration and interpretation of standardized
and structured functional assessment tools. The Occupational Therapy
Department consists of two services: inpatient and outpatient.
Inpatient Services: Hours 8 am - 4:30
pm, Monday - Saturday
Clinical Specialist: Regina Ferraro Doherty MS, OTR/L beeper 22971
617-726-8537; fax 617-724-0168
This service provides consultation, evaluation and treatment to all
units in the hospital. A physician's order is necessary to request
on OT consult; this order is then faxed. The inpatient therapist will
perform customized evaluation and treatment as indicated. Early referral
to OT service can help expedite discharge plans as all OT evaluations
include an assessment of the patient's functional level and discharge
needs. The following are appropriate reasons for inpatient referrals:
* evaluation and treatment of functional impairment
* discharge recommendations
* home safety evaluation (to determine the patient's ability to be
sent directly home)
* cognitive evaluation and treatment
* visual-perceptual evaluation and treatment (including low vision
adaptations)
* evaluation and training in ADL adaptations
* hand and upper extremity management
* fine motor training
* custom upper and/or lower extremity splinting (post-surgical or
contracture management).
Outpatient Services: Hours 7 am - 5
pm; Monday - Friday; ACC 127

This outpatient program provides comprehensive care for patients with
functional limitations due to cerebrovascular accidents, brain injury,
spinal cord injury, metastatic disease and progressive degenerative
conditions. All occupational therapy programs are established in accordance
with the goals of the patient and family. Treatment programs address
neuromuscular, cognitive, perceptual and functional impairments that
affect an individual's ability to safely perform community level tasks.
Education in compensatory strategies and functional retraining are
emphasized to facilitate successful return to community, work and
independent living.
MGH PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES
Physical Therapy Services provides physical therapy examination, evaluation
and intervention to patients with a wide variety of diagnoses and
diseases including those with orthopaedic, neurological, medical,

Inpatient Physical Therapy Service
The Inpatient Physical Therapy Service is organized
into four teams:
Neurology/Pediatrics Musculoskeletal/Burns
Medicine/Oncology Surgical
Inpatient hours are 8 am - 6:30 pm, seven days a week. Patients are
prioritized by the physical therapists for weekends and holiday intervention.
Frequency of intervention is determined by the physical therapist
following initial examination and evaluation.
A physicians order is needed for a consult and intervention
as appropriate. The order is faxed to the office by selecting the
Physical Therapy button on the floors fax machine, or the covering
therapist can be paged (unit staff on each floor have the appropriate
page number).
The consulting physical therapist will document patients level
of function and details of the initial evaluation, goals and treatment
plan in the patients record following the initial evaluation.
