Services Provided by the Registered Dietitians (RDs)

Each patient care unit has a registered dietitian assigned for primary coverage of several patient care units. The dietitian is responsible for:

  • screening charts to identify patients with nutrition issues and responding to consults from doctors and nurses to see patients with nutrition-related problems
  • assessing patients' nutritional status, planning and implementing a nutrition care plan; documenting the nutrition care plan in the medical record and communicating pertinent information to other members of the health care team
  • preparing a patient for discharge by providing nutrition "survival skills" and arranging for outpatient nutrition follow-up if appropriate; writing a referral for a patient with a nutrition care plan to be continued in another facility or at home.

To contact the Registered Dietitian for a specific floor, each patient care unit has a Diet Change Report sheet on a clipboard at the nursing station, and each morning the RD writes her/his name and beeper number on the Diet Change Report. RDs can be contacted through the hospital paging system or call 617-724-FOOD (724-3663), who can either contact the RD or provide the name and beeper number.

Note: The MGH Department of Dietetics Diet Reference Manual is available on each patient care unit. This manual gives an overview of all diet orders and provides detailed information about the rationale and implementation of each diet modification.
