MDConnect
Medical Director: Richard Zane, MD
Manager: James Pfeffer
In 1998, BWH and MGH joined together to launch "MDConnect",
a comprehensive transfer and transport program. The program is designed
to provide a high level of dedicated service to referring physicians
who transfer patients into the BWH or MGH, and also provides additional
transport options for critical care patients.
Referring physicians in the community who wish to transfer a patient
to MGH or BWH can call MDConnects referral line, 1-877-MD-Refer
(1-877-637-3337), to handle all aspects of a patient transfer, including
locating an attending physician, planning the patient's care, finding
a bed and arranging transport to the hospital. Following this conversation,
MDConnects telephone operators coordinate the patients
transfer with the appropriate clinical personnel. MDConnects
team reduces medical staff administrative burden by allowing attending
physicians, fellows, residents, and other medical staff to focus completely
on medical care.
Within one day of transfer, referring physicians receive a fax confirmation
of the transfer details, including the attending physician's name
and telephone number. The program uses ambulances and, if necessary,
mobile ICUs staffed by specially trained critical care nurses and
paramedics. Ground-based mobile ICUs are capable of managing care
for the most seriously ill patientssuch as those on ventilators,
multiple intravenous drips and other specialized needs.
