Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) numbers are required for prescribing
controlled substances. Those trainees who hold a limited Massachusetts
medical license will be issued a DEA number under the hospital's umbrella
number upon arrival. This number can only be used at the issuing hospital.
Note: If you rotate to another institution
for training, you must register to use that institution's umbrella
DEA number.
Trainees who hold a full Massachusetts medical license should apply
for their own Federal DEA number and Massachusetts narcotic number.
Applications are available in the Registrar's Office at MGH (617-726-2119)
and at the Graduate Medical Education Office at BWH (617-732-8540).
Note: Physicians who were issued a federal DEA number based on a full
license in another state are not authorized to use that federal number
in Massachusetts.
