The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is
the national body that accredits certain postgraduate medical education
programs. The ACGME also serves as the deliberative body through which
standards for residency programs and procedures for accreditation
are established.
Each accredited residency and fellowship program is held to two sets
of standards by the ACGME: (1) the Institutional Requirements, applicable
to the institutions that sponsor accredited programs, and the individual
training programs, and (2) the Specialty (and relevant Subspecialty)
Requirements, applicable to corresponding individual programs. The
ACGME accreditation site visits to the sponsoring hospital, and the
Residency Review Committee site visits to each program, generally
occur every three-five years. The ACGME site visitor meets with trainees
selected by their peers as part of the individual program and institution
accreditation reviews.
The hospital performs internal reviews of each accredited program
that it sponsors. Participation by physician trainees is an important
component of the internal review process*. Residents and clinical
fellows are interviewed at the time their program undergoes an internal
review, and are also asked to participate in internal reviews of other
residency and fellowship programs.
*Any trainee interested in participating as a member of an internal
review committee should contact the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
