SMALL NECESSITIES LEAVE
In addition to the twelve weeks of family and medical leave provided
under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Small Necessities Leave
Act provides that eligible graduate trainees may request up to twenty-four
hours of unpaid leave for the following reasons:
- to participate in school activities directly related to the educational
advancement of a child of the graduate trainee, such as parent-teacher
conferences or interviewing for a new school
- to accompany a child of the graduate trainee to routine medical
or dental appointments such as checkups or vaccinations
- to accompany an elderly relative of the graduate trainee to routine
medical or dental appointments or appointments for other professional
services related to the elder's care, such as interviewing at nursing
or group homes.
Where the need for a small necessities leave is foreseeable, the graduate
trainee must request the leave not later than seven days in advance.
If the need for the leave is not foreseeable, the graduate trainee should
provide notice as soon as practicable under the circumstances. Graduate
trainees should not take small necessities leave in increments of less
than one hour. |
