EVALUATION OF TRAINEES

This policy represents the minimum standards regarding the evaluation of trainees (interns, residents and fellows) who are enrolled in programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and sponsored by the BWH and MGH.

  • The program director or his/her designee(s) is responsible for collecting written evaluations regarding trainee performance from relevant supervising attending physicians, and from other individuals as deemed appropriate.

  • In addition, there should be concurrent feedback to each trainee from the supervising attending.

  • The program director is responsible for ensuring that feedback/counseling sessions are held at least annually with each trainee in order to help analyze and synthesize the individual faculty evaluations of the trainee, highlight trends, identify weaknesses or areas of insufficient progress and design remedies, as appropriate. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity to discuss career development and counseling.

  • The program director is responsible for documenting that feedback/counseling sessions with each trainee have taken place as described above. This activity is considered to be "peer review" and as such is confidential.
