Prep Mac for network connection

Though your new Mac may seem ready to be placed on the network, there are a few steps that must be taken in order to ensure that it is going to be secure on the Partners Network. First and foremost, make sure you have Software Update enabled to check for weekly updates. Navigate > Apple menu > System Preferences… > Software Update

* These instructions can be downloaded as a .pdf.

Did you know?

a. Partners license with McAfee includes Virex, their antivirus product for Macs.

· To install Partners licensed Virex software, call the Help Desk (617-726-5085) and ask for a research tech to stop by to install Virex and the most recent .dats,

OR

· Use an existing Mac on the network and download the software (internal only) and burn a CD and then install it on your new Mac.

b. To periodically update your virus definitions (.dats):

· Configure Virex to search for .dat updates automatically when you launch it:

Open Virex
Click > Preferences
Click > box next to “Check for new virus definitions at launch”

c. The Mac Mail and Microsoft’s Entourage clients can be configured to work with your Partners email account.

· Call the Help Desk (617-726-5085) and ask for a research tech to stop by to help you configure Mac Mail or Entourage

OR

· Do it yourself by following these directions.

d. You can access many Partners applications via your Mac using Citrix software. Citrix is software that allows Mac users to access applications that were built to run only in a Partners-build PC environment (e.g., PCIS/CAS, RPDR, PAS) from work and from home while connected to the Partners Network via remote access.

· To install Citrix, you must be on the Network and navigate to the Partners Portal webpage, we strongly suggest you use your Safari browser for this.

· You will be prompted for your Partners username and password.

· You will be presented with a window populated with icons of the applications for which you have permission.

· If you are using your Safari browser, simply click the desired application and a Citrix session will load.

· If you are using Firefox/Netscape, look to the right of the application window and Click > Install Client button to install the Citrix client.

· Instructions on installing Citrix are located on the Research Computing website, (scroll halfway down the page; see .pdf download of instructions).

e. You can use your Network home drive just as you would with a Partners PC. Your home drive is secure, safe, personal storage for everyone with Partners credentials; it is backed up nightly. Call the Help Desk (617-726-5085) and ask:

· For a research tech to stop by to help you “map” your Mac to your home drive.

· You can also map your home drive using smb by following these instructions.

f. You can also connect to any Shared File Area or Folder you’ve been granted access to using the same process with smb.

Recommended Software for your new Mac if you work at Partners/one of the hospitals:

MS Office 2004 or 2008 and Endnote X1 for the Mac.

If you want to run Windows on your Mac there are two choices:

Parallels (runs Windows on top of your Mac OS)
Bootcamp (dual boot)

You will also need to purchase a copy of MS Windows.

MS Office, Endnote and Parallels can be purchased via Partners Software Asset Management (internal link). Bootcamp can be purchased from Apple or Harvard.
