We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.  ~ Winston Churchill

Thanks from our Graduates!

"I simply want to express to you these thoughts as I sit here at 5:27 am, and I feel like I'm on top of the world. Not because of my humble position at MGH, but because I know that I can now do anything, or go anywhere, and make it."

"When I was very vulnerable in my life (didn't even know if I could get a job much less keep one) the PCWD team offered the reinforcement I needed to gain confidence and tread forward. Never, did I imagine I would land a position so quickly but now as I look back, I realize the need and desire was there all along, I just needed someone to [bring] it out. This IS what PCWD did for me."

"I am so grateful to have been given the chance to gain knowledge and skills at BWH. I would like to personally thank you for thinking of me to be someone you would like to represent PCWD in getting the word out that the program is successful. I have to say it's definitely a confidence boost!"

"Spaulding is fantastic! I have learned so much and everybody is always nice and helpful. I am glad I accepted the position here and hope I will be able to progress ... in such a wonderful environment. I know I have said this many times but I thank you again for the opportunity to go through the class and to be a part of PCWD. It has been a great experience, and I am sure it will continue to be."

I am beginning to settle in here at NWH after four months on the job. The work is interesting and has challenged me to learn more medical terminology and coding.  As brief as the program is, I was able to go from homemaker to healthcare worker in six weeks.
Let the students know that NWH is a great place to work and is not too far away.

"I was just updating my resume and cannot help but think of the many, many ways PCWD has shaped my life since October 2005. I look at where I was back then and where I am now and get teary eyed. Thank you so very much for letting me be a part of such a GREAT program and for opening new doors for my family and myself."

"In my culture, you are what parents strive to structure their children after: women of success, intelligent and benevolent! I received so much advice that I feel like I have a handle on my life now. It is because of you that even though I might have a little fear, I am not afraid to say and let it be seen that I have what it takes, and what I don't have I will work ten times harder to succeed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Dear Friend of PCWD,

On behalf of the Partners Career and Workforce Development (PCWD) training and employment program, we want to thank you for your invaluable support. This year the PCWD program concludes its fifth year, and our work with mostly low-income Boston residents finishes its tenth successful year!

With a New Year around the corner, we want to remind you what it means to give someone a new beginning, and a special thanks to those of you who have trained, mentored, and supported our participants as interns or as new employees.  Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those who are looking to launch a health care career while helping Partners deliver on its commitment to develop a skilled and diverse health care labor force for the future. We hope to work with you again in 2009.

PCWD 1998-2008

Over the last ten years, we have trained over 350 people, placing 80% in full-time jobs with benefits. At the end of 2002, it took about 120 days to place a graduate, and the average starting hourly rate was $10.61.  In 2004, we launched PCWD, and this year our average starting hourly rate is $14.26, and we reached our highest starting hourly rate ever at $18.50. We also achieved our fastest average "days to placement" post-graduation - just 37 days. Now, 84% of our placements are still employed after 6 months, and 72% are still employed after one year.

Earlier this year, we submitted our latest outcome data to The Benchmarking Project of Public/Private Ventures, a respected national organization that aims to create and strengthen programs that improve lives in low-income communities through research, policy and program development.  The goal of the project was to identify meaningful outcome benchmarks for the workforce development field, so that practitioners, funders and policymakers can be better informed about what constitutes strong performance when working with diverse populations and service delivery strategies.

In a survey of 151 workforce development programs, PCWD was ranked above average in every category.  We achieved a near perfect 30-day retention rate at 97%, compared to the median of 74%.  Our program was 20% above the median in overall placement rate and 6-month placement rate.  Analysis continues on the one-year retention rate, but we are confident that we will benchmark high.

This year, we broke new ground on many fronts: doubled the number of internships we offer; implemented a paid-internship program after graduation that allows participants to continue to build their skills and provide support to a department while receiving a modest stipend; and expanded our placements from BWH and MGH to Spaulding/PCC, NWH, Faulkner, and Partners Corporate.

TEAM=Together Everyone Achieves More

Many of you have contributed to these impressive outcomes by hosting a tour, participating in mock interviews, delivering a workshop, sponsoring an internship, hiring a graduate or offering valuable technical assistance.  But you also helped create and build our capacity to provide benefits that are beyond measure: the confidence gained, the pride instilled, the ability of our participants to see themselves in an incredibly positive new light, and the opportunity for motivated adults make a better life for themselves and their families. I hope more of you will be able to make it to a PCWD graduation to see the impact you're having firsthand-and hear it in the words of the participants themselves.

Next year, with great thanks to MGH Training and Workforce Development, we will be operating from a new and larger classroom that will allow us to serve more participants.  We plan to make our website more interactive and - with your help - make more hospital managers aware of the health care training and employment program. In addition, in the spirit of giving back we hope to further enrich the mentoring component of the program by directly connecting our trainees with successful graduates - a great suggestion made by one of our recent graduates.

In her words: "I would very much like to help students if I could. Have I told all of you lately how much I appreciate being a part of the program and everyone on the team that helped me get my position at MGH? Well, I am thanking you now!"

And now, we thank you. Happy Holidays to you and yours, and we look forward to working with you in 2009.
