Getting Started:
Partners HealthCare generally hires professional clinical coders with a minimum 2-year AS degree in Health Information Technology (HIT). Individuals with a High School Diploma or GED who are interested in professional clinical coding should seek and accredited program for HIT (Health Information Technology). Local community colleges and some private institutions offer these programs. It is important to be sure that the program offers core coding courses such as anatomy and physiology, medical and procedural terminology, medications and disease classification systems.
Individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree in another field may pursue a post-BS clinical coding certificate program. Again, courses should include anatomy and physiology, medical and procedural terminology, medications and disease classification systems. These courses may be obtained at local colleges or through distance learning programs provided by the American Healthcare Information AHIMA Management Association (AHIMA)
