PARTNERS HEALTHCARE EARNS NATIONAL E-HEALTH HONOR
Named Among the Nation’s Top 100 ‘Most Wired’ Health Systems

Partners HealthCare has been named one of the nation’s top 100 ‘Most Wired’ hospitals and health systems for the tenth consecutive year. The recognition is awarded by Hospital and Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, which reported that patient satisfaction was higher and outcomes were better at hospitals on the top 100 list. Partners HealthCare is one of only six organizations in the country to earn the honor each year since H&HN first debuted the list in 1999.

H&HN singled out Partners HealthCare for achieving ten consecutive years on the list and for excellence in medication safety. According to the magazine, “Partners excels in medication safety, with physicians using
e-prescribing for 90 percent of inpatient medication orders, a sophisticated array of drug alerts for nurses, pharmacists and physicians, and a comprehensive electronic medication reconciliation process.”

Results of the magazine’s 10th annual Most Wired survey, published this month, showed that patients at the top technology hospitals have a better overall assessment of their stay and specifically are more satisfied
with the admissions process and the manner in which tests and treatments are handled. Additionally, the magazine details a correlation between technology and quality, with the top 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems having better outcomes on a variety of quality measures, including risk-adjusted mortality rates.

“The use of high technology in medicine is no longer an option, or simply something that hospitals and health systems are planning for – it is an integral part of the way care is delivered today,” said James J. Mongan, MD, President & CEO of Partners HealthCare and 2008 recipient of Modern Healthcare’s IT Achievement Award. “Through our High Performance Medicine initiative, our physicians, nurses and IT staff have transformed the way we care for our patients -- offering better quality, higher levels of patient satisfaction and greater efficiency in the use of high cost drugs and tests.”

The ‘Most Wired’ designation represents the third time this year that Partners HealthCare has been recognized for excellence in healthcare IT achievement. Also this year, Partners was named one of the top 100 places to work in IT by Computerworld Magazine. Partners President & CEO James J. Mongan, MD received Modern Healthcare’s IT Achievement Award for 2008.
