BOSTON – Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), the founders of Partners HealthCare, have again ranked among the nation’s top hospitals on the 2009-2010 U.S. News & World Report annual Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals, with both hospitals ranking in the top ten.  The magazine ranks the top 20 hospitals among more than 4,800 nationwide.  Boston is the only city in the United States with two hospitals I n the top ten.  MGH ranked fifth nationally, while BWH ranked tenth.  In all, four Partners HealthCare hospitals earned high rankings in the report.

“Every day, physicians, nurses, clinical and support staff within our hospitals rededicate themselves to our mission of providing extraordinary care to all of our patients.  This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgement of their talent, compassion, and commitment to providing the highest quality of care,” said Partners President and CEO James J. Mongan, MD. “I thank and congratulate our caregivers on their tremendous achievement, and for giving Boston the distinction of being the only city in the United States with two hospitals in the top ten.”

Partners hospitals also scored well in the individual specialties rankings, and were rated among the top ten in 13 of the 16 specialty fields.  BWH ranked first in kidney disease for the third consecutive year, and ranked first in gynecology.  MGH was ranked first in psychiatry for the fourteenth consecutive year, while McLean Hospital ranked third in psychiatry and continues to be the highest-ranking freestanding psychiatric hospital on the list.  Spaulding placed sixth in rehabilitation, and was again the only New England rehabilitation hospital making the list. In addition, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, with which Partners formed Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, ranked fifth nationally in cancer, while the MGH Cancer Center ranked seventh.

MGH was among the top ten hospitals in the country in twelve specialties, including psychiatry, cancer, heart and heart surgery, endocrinology, gastrointestinal disorders, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology/neurosurgery, kidney disease, orthopedics, respiratory disorders, and rheumatology.

BWH ranked in the top ten hospitals in the country in five categories, including kidney disease, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, endocrinology, and rheumatology.

U.S. News analyzed data on more than 4,800 hospitals to produce this year’s rankings.  Only 174 medical centers were ranked in one or more specialties and, of those, just 21 earned Honor Roll status.

Partners HealthCare, founded in 1994 by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, is an integrated health system that includes primary care and specialty physicians, the two academic medical centers, community and specialty hospitals, community health centers, home health and long-term care services, and other health-related entities.  In addition to its patient care mission, Partners is one of the nation’s premier biomedical research organizations and a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
