Providing Choices for Patients, Resources for Physicians

For more than 30 years, Partners' Harvard-affiliated hospitals have been working hand-in-hand with the island's patients, physicians and insurers to offer Bermudians the most advanced medical care in the world.

If the particular therapy or treatment option you need isn't available locally, Partners' 6000 physicians can provide innovative health care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery. For a full list of medical specialties, please click here.

Bermuda's Preferred Referral Center for Oncology

In 2008, Partners was selected by the Bermuda Hospitals Board as the preferred referral center for cancer care. Partners has two state-of-the-art cancer centers. The Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center is located in the Longwood Medical Area adjacent to Harvard Medical School. The Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center is located downtown in the west end of Boston. Both offer the most highly, research-driven cancer care available in the world.

Dr. Larry Shulman, Chief Medical Officer of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has been appointed the Oncology Medical Advisor to Bermuda. Dr. Shulman and his team will work closely with caregivers in Bermuda to raise standards of cancer care on-island, and facilitate referrals off-island when appropriate.

Patient Referrals

Cancer Patients:

If you need a referral, please contact your general practitioner or Dr. Terence Sparling, Director of the Oncology Clinic at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (tel. 441-239-2044). When necessary, Dr. Sparling will consult with cancer experts from Partners to expedite your referral.

For information on the Bermuda Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program, please click here.

All Other Patients:

The referral process begins with your general practitioner, who will help you to determine if overseas care is required. If the answer is yes, your general practitioner will refer you to an on-island specialist. In turn, the on-island specialist will refer you to off-island care.

Should you have any questions about the referral process, please contact Leslie Shane.
