ACTIVE PROJECTS

The HIV Equity Initiative

In 1985, two visionary physicians from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Paul Farmer and Jim Kim, joined with colleagues to establish Zanmi Lasante, a clinical facility designed to provide comprehensive health care and outpatient services, free of charge, to an impoverished, rural population in Haiti’s Central Plateau.

Over the years, Zanmi Lasante achieved unprecedented clinical success, and international acclaim, especially as one of the first programs anywhere to provide free, comprehensive HIV treatment and prevention services in a resource-poor setting.

Today Zanmi Lasante is led by Haitian clinicians and the program currently handles 1 million patient visits annually at nine sites. Additionally, Zanmi Lasante's community health workers make over 1 million home visits each year. The program cares for more than 8,000 HIV patients.

PIH is a non-profit organization affiliated with the DSMHI at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
