What are Centers of Expertise?

• access to senior faculty with rich experience in the thematic area for advice and mentoring;
• reading materials, carefully selected by faculty, and available on-line;
• invitations to lectures, workshops and other educational events;
• •opportunities to participate in elective experiences of variable length and intensity tailored to individual needs;
• a connection with a community of colleagues across specialties and at varying stages of their careers, with a shared interest and common purpose.

The opportunities will help to prepare Partners trainees for leadership in all areas of medicine and health care.

How do trainees participate in Centers of Expertise?

• Participation in Centers is open to all trainees.
• Grants for research funding, travel or conferences is by application. Details are on each COE site.
• Trainees can attend sessions or connect with faculty in multiple Centers.
• RSVPS to sessions are appreciated.

What is the history of Centers of Expertise?

- 2006-2007: Partners Physician Education Strategic Planning GME Task Force described a vision where Partners trainees not only achieve excellence as clinicians, but also gain an “added value,” based on their talent, motivation, and access to outstanding faculty and other resources.

- 2008: Key areas of interest were identified by task force and surveys of trainees. Themes identified included:

• patient care quality and safety,
• global health/care of underserved populations,
• public health and preventive medicine,
• biomedical research.

-2008: Launch of Quality and Patient Safety and Academic Heathcare Management Centers.

- 2009: Launch of Centers of Expertise in Global Health, Health Policy and Research.

- 2010: Anticipated Launch of Center of Expertise in Medical Education.
