Andrew Seger, PharmD, Sr. Research Pharmacist


Andrew Seger graduated with a BS in Pharmacy in 1984 and with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2003 from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He has practiced as an ambulatory care pharmacist for 15 years. He then became involved with the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) program for Medicaid recipients at The Center for Healthcare Finance of The University of Massachusetts Medical School in various capacities. He started as a researcher in adverse drug event (ADE) research at The Meyers Primary Care Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts prior to coming to Partners HealthCare System.

Dr. Seger is a Senior Research Pharmacist with Clinical and Quality Analysis, Information Systems at Partners HealthCare Systems and The Division of General Medicine & Primary Care at Brigham & Women's Hospital. He is an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and serves as an editor of the Institute for Safe Medication Practice (ISMP) Medication Safety Alert (Community/Ambulatory Care Edition) newsletter.

Areas of Interest Include:

•  Medication safety and the pharmacist's role in it
•  Dispensing errors and the possible prevention of these events
•  Information technology (IT) and the application of IT systems to medication use process to decrease quality related events
•  The utility of pharmacist interventions to improve quality

•  Using Bar-code Technology to Improve Medication Safety
•  Solid Oral Dose-form Identification (SODId)
•  Assessing the Impact of a Computerized Rule Set to detect and reduce adverse drug events
