Hours
Children's Corner is open from 6:45 am to 5:45 pm, 52 weeks per year excluding holidays. We provide flexible hours and scheduling options.

Location
The center is located on the campus of Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Our building is a historical site renovated to appeal to young children. We have two large playground areas in the front and back of the building.

Our Program

Toddlers
The children enrolled in our Toddler programs are between the ages of 1 to 2 years (Cubs) and 2 to 3 years (Chipmunks). We offer a great deal of individual attention, warmth and care for each child. There is a ratio of one teacher to each three or four children, depending on the ages within the group.

Emphasis is placed on language development, self-help skills, social expectations linked to sharing, and motivating both fine and large motor development. Children are exposed to many enriching activities. Some examples include music, hands-on art, sensory experiences, storytelling, and loving physical contact. Toilet training will begin when a child is deemed ready by both parents and caregiver. Typically, this occurs when a consistent routine for training at home and school is established.

Our primary goal is to make sure that a child's first experience at school is a positive one. The rooms of Children's Corner reflect love and acceptance, where children are able to develop good feelings about themselves by having successful experiences.

Preschool
The children in our Preschool program are 3 to 4 years, (Kangaroos) and 4 to 5 years,
(Monkeys). A wide variety of activities are implemented in an atmosphere that fosters positive self-esteem and worth.

Each day includes a mix of child-initiated and teacher directed projects, indoor and outdoor free play and both small group and individual activities. The day begins with free play, promoting active learning as children make choices in the different play areas available. As the day progresses the teachers implement activities that encourage independence, cooperation, creativity and problem solving.

The overall curriculum allows children to explore shapes, colors, letters, numbers, seasons, holidays, family structures, our community and the world around them. Fostering children's natural curiosity and encouraging independence are always considered.

Tours
Tours of the Center are scheduled by appointment only, Monday through Thursday between 9:30 and 11 am. Come meet our seasoned and energetic staff who provide the magic that makes Children's Corner a special place for children and their families.

Application Process
The center primarily serves families where at least one parent is employed by Partners Health Care Systems Inc. Applications are available on-line or can be obtained by contacting the center. Submission of an application with a one time $35 application fee is required before enrollment. If a slot is not available then families will be placed on our wait list. Although openings may occur during the school year, typically new children enter the center in July or September. Please note that preference is first given to employees of Newton-Wellesley Hospital, then to employees of other Partners Institutions and finally to community families.

Meals and Snacks
At Children's Corner, we encourage good nutritional habits and expose children to a variety of foods. The snacks we provide include fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers and cereals. We do not serve lunch and ask parents to provide a ready to eat lunch for their child. The center does provide milk or non-sweetened juices with lunch and snack.

Parent Participation
Parents are welcome to visit the center any time. We encourage both participation in activities or spending time observing. Field trips are an integral part of the program. Another venue for parent participation may include joining your child for a picnic, a trip to the zoo, museum, the circus, or apple picking at a farm.

Management of the Center
The Newton-Wellesley Children's Corner is entrusted to an 11 member Board of Directors comprised of both management team representatives from the hospital and parents from the center. The Board of Directors approves all policy and financial decisions. The Director manages the day-to-day programming of the center, which is implemented by our well educated and nurturing teaching staff.
