Puzzled about where and how to get started in coding?

To obtain information and educational requirements check out:
American Health Information Management Association website at: http://www.ahima.org/certification and the
American Academy of Professional Coders at: http://www.aapc.com/education/index.html

For people with a High School Diploma or GED, a community college that has an accredited program for HIT (Health Information Technology) is a great place to start! Core courses for coding are: anatomy and physiology, medical and procedural terms, medications and disease classification systems.

For people with a Bachelor’s Degree in another field, courses in coding classification, anatomy and physiology, and medication, are needed and can be obtained through AHIMA courses or through a certificate program to prepare you for the coding field.
