Mission & Goals

Overview
The Partners Healthcare System (PHS) Business Development (BD) group is part of PHS’s broader Research Ventures and Licensing (RVL) organization.  RVL’s mission is to support innovative research and the translation of PHS science and technology to the patient bedside and greater healthcare community.  In line with this mission, the BD group has two distinct operational functions:

1. Strategic alliance development and management (Strategic Alliance Group)

  • Create long-term strategic relationships with industry collaborators to develop innovative solutions to critical healthcare problems, and support the PHS research and clinical enterprises
  • Leverage the PHS integrated healthcare delivery system to develop, test and validate cutting edge solutions to unmet healthcare needs

2. Marketing of intellectual property (IP) and innovative technologies arising from the PHS enterprise (Technology Marketing Group)

  • Optimize the transfer of PHS IP and technologies to industry through an innovative, programmatic approach to academic IP/technology marketing

Strategic Alliance Group
The Strategic Alliance group in Business Development (BD) supports the RVL mission by establishing and managing long-term collaborations with industry partners whose strategies and interests align with prioritized PHS initiatives. Current broad areas of focus for strategic alliances at PHS include:

  • Personalized Medicine / Molecular Diagnostics
  • Connected Health and Telemedicine
  • Next Generation IS/IT Solutions for PHS Research and Clinical Functions

The Strategic Alliance team’s primary goal for collaborations is to accelerate the development of next generation healthcare solutions by leveraging both academic and industry expertise.  An important component of these collaborations is the ability to utilize the PHS integrated healthcare delivery system as a “living laboratory” to develop, test, and validate innovative solutions and technologies in a real clinical context.

The BD model for strategic alliances anticipates relationships with industry collaborators across the spectrum of life science and healthcare sectors.  These collaborations are often multi-year, broad, flexible, and dedicated to developing innovative solutions to critical healthcare needs.

Examples of the types of alliances established by the BD team can be found on our Current Deals page.

Marketing Group
Integral to the RVL mission is the process of patenting and licensing of intellectual property to industry to ensure that inventions having commercial merit will receive the investment required to bring them to market.

The Marketing Group within Business Development supports the licensing process in the following manner:

  • Enhances the patent decision-making process by providing insight into the commercial potential of inventions.
  • Systematically evaluates and markets a broad portfolio of inventions from the two flagship research hospitals, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
  • Cultivates and maintains a strong network of contacts in the Biotech, Pharmaceutical, Diagnostic and Device industries.
  • Targets appropriate companies for each invention, and presents a complete and relevant value proposition.
  • Conducts a market-oriented valuation of intellectual property.

The Marketing Group’s primary goals are to provide a logical first contact for industry seeking to access the inventions of both research hospitals, to enhance the licensing experience for industry by presenting a well developed value proposition for each technology, and to support the licensing professionals within the institutions with current and relevant market data to enhance decision making on patenting, valuation and licensing.
