“Identification of Dysregulated Genes in Patients with Neurological Diseases” [Blood Diagnostics for Neurodegenerative Diseases]” — BWH 1060

Inventors:      Clemens Scherzer, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Department of Medicine — Neurology
Steven Gullans, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Department of Medicine — Neurology
Roderick Jensen, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Department of Medicine — Neurology

The technology identifies a number of gene markers whose expression is altered in neurodegenerative diseases (ND). These markers can be used to diagnose or predict ND in subjects, and can be used in the monitoring of therapies. In addition, these genes identify therapeutic targets, the modification of which may prevent ND development or progression.

  1. Blood test for Parkinson’s Disease
  2. Blood test for Alzheimers Disease

Individuals who test positive for high-PD or high AD risk will be instructed to closely follow-up with a neurologist, to start exercise regimens and lifestyle modifications, and to consider taking safe and potentially neuroprotective nutritional supplements.

The clinical utility of this technology is the biomarkers will enable clinical trials of drugs designed to prevent or delay PD/AD onset. The technology has the potential to decrease the cost of phase II/III clinical trials.
