In 2004, Partners and community organizations were awarded
a three-year, $1 million grant to increase education and skills
training for new and incumbent health care workers, and to
develop new and innovative ways to help low income Boston
residents advance to skilled professional jobs in nursing,
radiology technology, and other allied health fields where
there are severe shortages of skilled workers. The program,
Partners in Career and Workforce Development (PCWD), is a
collaboration of Partners hospitals and many other organizations,
including the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Brigham
and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Spaulding Rehabilitation
Hospital (SRH), MGH Institute of Health Professions, Jewish
Vocational Service, WorkSource Staffing Partners, Whittier
Street Health Center, Project HOPE/Transition to Work, the
Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, Bunker Hill Community
College, Mass Bay Community College, Roxbury Community College,
and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. Partners
also provides financial support for this program.
PCWD’s dual goals are to support the career development
of employees and to respond to the workforce needs of the
Partners network.
PCWD’s accomplishments after two years are encouraging:
- During the past 2 years Partners in Career and Workforce
Development (PCWD) has provided career development services
to more than 500 employees looking to advance up the health
care career ladder and also to neighborhood residents seeking
entry-level health care jobs.
- BWH, MGH and SRH employees have taken pre-college
or college-level courses, GED and English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL) classes.
- Job retention rates are at 87 percent for individuals
who complete the pre-employment program and move to entry
level jobs.
- More than 200 participants of the PCWD program for incumbent
workers are actively involved in career coaching and educational
enhancement.
