Boston, MA – All Partners HealthCare (Partners) hospitals have been recognized by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care membership community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving safety and care. 

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston was honored with the “Greenhealth Emerald Award”, the highest level sustainability award. The Greenhealth Emerald Award is a very competitive award that recognizes health care facilities that have achieved improvements in their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. Winning hospitals are selected using Practice Greenhealth’s improved scoring and evaluation system. They demonstrate leadership in their sustainability practices and guidance in the local community and in the health care sector.

Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Cooley Dickinson Hospital, McLean Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care Cambridge, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center North End, Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care North Shore and Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center West Roxbury each received the “Partner for Change” Award. The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this Award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas.

Massachusetts General Hospital, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Nantucket Hospital each received the “Partner Recognition” Award, one of the Environmental Excellence Awards to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector. The Partner Recognition Award is given to health care facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements, have achieved some progress, and have at least a ten percent recycling rate for their total waste stream.

Partners HealthCare has made sustainability a top priority and is one of the leaders in the health care sector in its commitment to reduce its environmental footprint.  Partners is a founding member of the Healthier Hospital Initiative, a coalition of more than 1,000 hospitals across the country that have come together to improve sustainability and environmental safety in health care.  Partners President and CEO Dr. Gary Gottlieb is the co-chair of the health care sector of Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission, a group that brings together industry leaders to implement Boston’s Climate Action Plan.
