Partners HealthCare President and CEO David Torchiana, MD, in an op-ed in The Boston Globe stressed the need to understand the context of health care prices and value of clinical care on a state and national level.

Portraying our health care environment as causing a perpetual state of crisis, with a need for aggressive intervention, is simply not supported by the present context or trends.

Torchiana noted that Massachusetts health care costs to employers and consumers—when adjusted for wage differential—are among the lowest in the country, growing at historically low rates in the past five years. In addition, state hospital prices are in the bottom 20 percent.
