Before officially opening, the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital was featured on WCVB's Chronicle.
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, now open, is Boston’s first building designed to weather climate change. The hospital, located in the Charlestown Navy Yard, was built a full foot higher than the previous location and includes artificial reefs to protect against high tides of severe storms.
The hospital is expected to be a model of resiliency in terms of both climate change and patients. With lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital has operable windows and electrical services to keep patients safe in case of emergency.
Spaulding’s location at the Navy Yard supports its adaptive sports program and offers waterside views that help patients look to the future.
