Global Relief and Response
From Haiti and Myanmar to China and Iran, Partners physicians and nurses are involved deeply in humanitarian aid efforts all over the world. Caring for the global community has been the mission of Partners founding hospitals for 200 years. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a leader among its peer academic centers in humanitarian efforts, has treated the wounded in wars and disasters dating back to the World Wars.
Today, you’ll find Partners clinicians on the USNS Comfort working with Project HOPE to deliver health education, medicines and supplies. You’ll find them setting up clinics for treatment of HIV/AIDS, neurological disorders, and diseases like TB. Every day, clinicians from MGH and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) are training and mentoring both U.S. and international caregivers, and influencing worldwide global health policy.
Physicians and nurses under the leadership of Bruce Walker, MD are improving care, education and well-being of children and adults in South Africa and Uganda who have been affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Paul Farmer, MD, and BWH physicians work with Partners In Health (PIH) in Haiti, Peru, Rwanda, Lesotho, and other countries to implement pioneering models of care and conduct groundbreaking medical research on diseases that disproportionately afflict the poor. PIH is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
These global efforts will have a significant impact on lives around the world. Partners global health programs are contributing to medical research about the delivery of medical care in challenging global settings. . Physicians and researchers are able to work on infectious disease challenges that are compounded with multiple complications not as common here at home. Through Partners global initiatives, clinicians are able to expand their research in infectious disease and gain a deeper understanding of the immune system.
Partners’ commitment to serving those most in need transcends geography and has global reach, providing people and regions critical medical care when they need it most, such as at the outbreak of disease or war, or in the face of a natural disaster.
In 2010, for example, Partners HealthCare sent multiple teams of medical volunteers as well as critical medical supplies and equipment to support Partners In Health’s earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
