October 29- BOSTON —
Partners HealthCare physicians joined Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and leaders from the American Cancer Society October 29 at a ribbon cutting for the new AstraZeneca Hope Lodge in the City’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Hope Lodge will provide up to 14,600 nights of free temporary housing each year to hundreds of cancer patients and their family members who travel far from home for medical treatment in Boston. Located at the site of the former Vincent Memorial Hospital on South Huntington Avenue, the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge will provide temporary housing, shared cooking and dining facilities, a library, screening room, healing garden, and free transportation to treatment, counseling, and other vital cancer support services. The building will also house an American Cancer Society Community Resource Center for the Society’s community programs and patient services, and available to local community groups for gatherings. This is the 28th Hope Lodge in the nation to be opened by the American Cancer Society.
The number of cancer patients in need of housing such services continues to increase; in Boston, prior to the Hope Lodge opening, there were just 61 hospitality rooms available in the City for cancer patients and their families.
