Partners HealthCare makes $2.5 million contribution to Boston Health Care for the Homeless

Partners HealthCare has made a $2.5 million charitable contribution to the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. The contribution is the largest capital gift Partners has ever made.

The Partners gift builds on a long-standing relationship between the two organizations. In 1985, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a founding hospital of Partners HealthCare, became the first private, not-for-profit academic medical center to host a Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) clinic. Last year, homeless patients made more than 3,600 visits to the BHCHP’s clinic at MGH.

The $2.5 million contribution will go towards BHCHP’s capital campaign, which seeks to raise $17 million to renovate the Mallory Building, which will serve as an anchor for its far-reaching program, operating at more than 70 sites throughout the greater Boston area. The renovation will enable BHCHP to expand its capacity to provide medical respite care for medically complex homeless patients.

“Partners commitment to Boston Health Care for the Homeless is part of our core values as an organization – to provide outstanding and compassionate health care to all our patients regardless of their income. But this gift is also about providing cost effective care in the right setting and preventing disparities in health outcomes,” said James J. Mongan, president and CEO of Partners HealthCare.

The contribution to BHCHP forms part of Partners’ core commitment to improving the health of the community. Last year, Partners spent a total of $148 million on community benefit programs, including providing free care for uninsured patients; improving care for community health center patients; and supporting innovative community health partnerships designed to address some of the region’s toughest problems including racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care, domestic violence, adolescent health and substance abuse, as well as health care for the homeless.
