In 1994, a total of five community health centers (CHCs) were operated by Partners hospitals. Today, a total of 20 community health centers are operated by or affiliated with Partners, and nearly 200,000 CHC patients have access to Partners hospitals each year.
Over a 10-year period beginning in 1998, BWH, MGH, PHS, and NSMC committed over $60M to expand health center capacity, improve quality, and enhance services:
- Financial and clinical commitments to 13 health centers
- 58 percent of the commitments supported new buildings or renovations of Brookside, Codman Sq., Dorchester House, East Boston, Neponset, Lynn, Southern Jamaica Plain, Upham's Corner, and Whittier Street
- 42 percent of the commitments supported other capital or operating expenses including:
- LMR (electronic medical records) for East Boston
- IT and Public Health programs at Upham’s Corner
- Substance Abuse prevention in South Boston
As a result of these long term commitments, access to OB, Primary Care, and Urgent Care was significantly enhanced.
Annually, Partners provides nearly $50 million in operating subsidies to strengthen community health centers, especially in Charlestown, Chelsea, Jamaica Plain, and Revere. Partners works closely with the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers in providing this support.
